My How We've Grown! The History of APAOG
Rebecca Lehman, PA-C, Founder and Past President

The year was 1991 and the American Academy of Physician Assistants (AAPA) was meeting in San Francisco. Several PA specialty groups had been formed and others were contemplated. Even though she had met very few other PAs working in obstetrics and gynecology, Rebecca Lehman PA-C secured a meeting room and posted a notice. The flyer advertised a meeting for all interested PAs working in OB/GYN, inviting them to attend an informational meeting. Approximately 25 people arrived and after introductions and a lively discussion, they discovered common challenges facing them in clinical practice and were excited about the possibility of starting a specialty group for PAs in OB/GYN. The original bylaws were "borrowed" with permission from the Association of Physician Assistants in Cardiovascular surgery and adapted for the newly founded Association of Physician Assistants in Obstetrics and Gynecology (APAOG). APAOG was incorporated in Wisconsin as a not for profit corporation later that year. The first newsletter was published in the spring of 1992 and the first meeting was held on May 6, 1992 in Nashville, TN. At that time APAOG had 149 members.
