Breast cancer patients showed increased long-term risk of atrial fibrillation (AF), with a short-term risk for younger women as well, a population-based Danish study indicated. Women younger than age 60 were more than twice as likely to have AF during the first six months after cancer diagnosis, and risk was increased by 80 percent from six months to three years, according to Maria D'Souza, MD, of Copenhagen University Hospital Herlev-Gentofte in Hellerup, Denmark, and colleagues.

Rates of HPV-positive tumors are increasing among patients with oropharyngeal cancer in the U.S., regardless of sex or race, according to a retrospective cohort study published in Cancer. Additionally, gender and race are independently associated with survival in HPV-negative — but not HPV-positive — tumor status, researchers observed.

The American Gastroenterological Association (AGA) has issued a new report designed to standardize the management of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) in pregnancy.

Published in Gastroenterology, the guide, "Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) Clinical Practice Pathway," is intended as a practice resource addressing the continuum of care from preconception to the postpartum period for IBD patients. The report is also scheduled for publication in Inflammatory Bowel Diseases and the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology.

Data were included from a sample of 25,499 postmenopausal women aged 50 to 79 years in the Women's Health Initiative without current/former menopausal hormone therapy use.
