Obtaining Privileges
When an Ob/Gyn PA wants to practice in a hospital setting, he or she must first go through a process
known as credentialing, as well as apply for privileges. This process generally consists of completing
paperwork that will be reviewed by various committees in the hospital to verify that the PA is qualified
to practice medicine and perform requested procedures in their specific hospital. Each hospital will
have its own forms to fill out. In general, the PA will need to provide demographic information, school/
training/employment history, supervising physician information, proof of malpractice insurance and
claims history, proof of CME hours, proof of PA medical license, professional references, and a list of
procedures (usually the same procedures that are being requested to be performed in the hospital) and
the numbers performed of each. If the hospital has never had a PA apply for privileges in the department
of Ob/Gyn, then the PA may want to include in his or her request for approval the following: take and
perform an Ob/Gyn history and physical, triage an Ob or Gyn patient, perform a speculum exam, perform
a digital manual vaginal exam, and write nursing and other hospital staff orders including, but not limited
to admission, discharge, and medication orders. These requests for privileges are on top of the standard
procedures that all clinicians apply for when getting privileges in Ob/Gyn. Below is a sample template of
an Ob/Gyn Procedure List that you may download and tailor to your needs.
